Franks’s uniquely sculpted vessels and sculptures grow from his surfing, diving, and fishing background and his life in Honokaʻa on Hawaiʻi Island. He uses specialized power carving, grinding, and sanding tools to find soft organic shapes in the rough wood of fallen trees. This three bowl set is carved from the same piece of wood to eliminate waste. Several of his pieces are in the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Collection.

“Having no formal art training has allowed me to avoid some of the pitfalls of convention. My current work draws heavily on the tools and skills I used as a youth in the surfboard industry.”
